a selection of meetup groups use the walks but you have to pay to go on them - seems ridiculous
Central London Outdoor Group CLOG also use the books
Saturday 22 November - Box Hill to Leatherhead. Twenty one on this walk. Started out misty and remained misty all day. Everyone got across the 'stepping stones' okay and were duly rewarded with one hell of a climb up to the top of Box Hill. Lunch was taken at the Running Horses pub who weren't as unwelcoming as we had been led to believe. After lunch everyone seemed to decide to take the option to return to Box Hill rather than Leatherhead. The group which then took the further option of the ridge/hill, rather than the valley, got lost! Three navigation phones, a map and finally a compass finally got us all safely back to Box Hill for nice hot teas and cake.
There's an element of give and take here. For example, a walk I once led for the Ramblers was (Book 1) Gomshall to Guildford, 10 miles. Knowing they'd grumble about the short distance I added on 5 miles from Dorking along the North Downs Way, making it a grand day out, and acknowledged I'd poached 2/3s of the route.
Conversely, a walk I invented for t'Ramblers, later became Book 3 Wk 108, 15 miles, Burgess Hill to Hassocks, quite tough so that fellow walk posters & authors constantly want to hack and change it. C'est la vie!
Meet-up folk: further to my last comment; I've suggested to some people I've met on Meet-up events (who expressed an interest in rambling) that they should try Saturday Walkers and download their own walk instructions etc. However, it seems you can't persuade some folk NOT to hand over baubles to a mercenary gruppenfuhrer who will lead them on a glorious crusade around the Garden of England! It was ever thus!
I think we should approach CLOG - they are paid membership, that if they use our walks (not from books) but download extra walks from our website, they should make a donation to us, as we run by volunteers, no subscription fee and we have cost of running the website. Same applies to Meet-up groups.
As creator of over 40 walks for the SWC I would be happy if these groups gave us a plug when they use our walks (the SWC ones at least). "This walk was created by the Saturday Walkers Club" plus a weblink.
....and btw don't be too hard on those who like to follow a gruppenfurher. On an average SWC walk I would say 85 percent of people don't look at the walk directions at all. I know some (no names!) who never even bring them. And when I first came on SWC walks back in Nicholas Alberey days I was astonished that he was not charging even a small fee. A minority of Meet Up groups do seem to treat it as a money making enterprise and that annoys me. But others may just be trying to cover the charges Meet Up levies on them.
I'm happy for non profit making groups, like CLOG or The Ramblers, to use our walks.
We do require that people link back to us however. Them that do are listed above.
Not the case for meetup etc. but SWC owe a huge debt to the Ramblers who have worked over the decades to keep / maintain open footpaths. David Cooke
If you click the link of the first French group, you can see they even put our website in the programme, so people could download directly. The student website actually acknowledged us as a source of their materials and our rules of use. I don't mind students use our walks. Is CLOG really a charity or just registered as a charity? It is not specifically stated in their website? I don't see them vastly different from us in terms of the cause except they have paid memberships to support their website and activities and we don't. Do they do anything like Rambler Association to help maintaining footpath?
It is like going to a museum, it is free but there is a donation box. Some give and some just walk pass it. Some contribute by being a volunteer, eat at the cafe or buy something from the museum shop. Some run profitable art appreciation classes at the museum. The museum does not mind because their aim is to get more people involved in art.
If we are able to get more people into country walks and they receive the benefit of it, then we should be proud that we have brought joy to others lives.
I agree wholeheartedly with Lucilla's sentiments. Well put.
Please note there is PEW every weekend until end February on Portsmouth line possibly others out of Waterloo. A real pain! Please avoid posting these at the mo.
A comment was posted here about longer/shorter walks. I moved this to the Forum, which is a better place for it.
Having found this thread I should disclose that I have led several walks for the North Kingston Hillwalking Club (website (pro tem) nkhc.co.uk) using or adapting walks on the SWC site. I've added a link to the SWC on the NKHC website and an explanation of what you offer (although note that I've been plugging the Saturday Walkers relentlessly with the club for the last couple of years without any takers that I know of).
The London European Club (a big Meetup group) often use SWC walks, charge a small fee for walks, and never seem to acknowledge the SWC.
thanks. they've been reminded to link back to us.
Capital Walkers also never credit the SWC, so they need reminding.
