Each KML file is added a new Bookmark. These are number sequentially but can be renamed, if you wish.
- The free Open Street Maps are used which I have found have enough detail for the SWC walks
- It very quickly gets a fix on your location.
- The interface is clean and simple to use.
- It does what I need it to do – show my position in relation to the route I want to follow.
The app is free to download and use and is available for Android and Apple.
If you find the app useful, I suggest making a donation to the volunteer team to help towards the costs of developing, maintaining, and supporting the app.
To download the app and to get more information, go to https://organicmaps.app/MoonBrainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15511561454961280679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-27808750485989098612021-09-06T18:26:13.317+01:002021-09-06T18:26:13.317+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.MoonBrainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15511561454961280679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-49259699729930678462021-08-21T07:51:37.579+01:002021-08-21T07:51:37.579+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.MoonBrainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15511561454961280679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-55351871745004305052020-11-29T09:19:09.736+00:002020-11-29T09:19:09.736+00:00When I download SWC walks onto my OS app I am not ...When I download SWC walks onto my OS app I am not offered options, ( when the walk includes several alternatives), as two of my fellow walkers are. I use a Samsung A40, and the app worked fine until I think maybe before or after Christmas. Then it started to go blank while in the middle of a walk, or show the route but not the map. I think maybe I had not successfully downloaded the route so when I lost phone reception, I obviously lost the map. Today I didn’t feel up to a proper walk ( it’s not coronavirus honestly!) so decided to download a local short walk Sydenham to Dulwich, switch onto airplane mode and see if it worked.
I haven’t even left the house as the walk has not downloaded and is “queued”. I've been using the iphone versions. I found Viewranger does more of the things I've tried out (finding location using grid ref, tracking route, following a route) but doesn't always load up at the correct resolution in the field (even if tested on wifi at home). And although maps.me has less functionality it is much easier to read as well as more reliable. It did take me ages to figure out how to load up a KML file though: thanks for your help yesterday Edgar, I cracked it today. I'm going to persevere with both before trying paid-for OS mapping.Sandynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-69363763872388357782019-09-30T21:32:06.525+01:002019-09-30T21:32:06.525+01:00Thanks both. The reason is that since introduction of the subscription, they will not let people download maps if they bought them more than 2 years ago.
I agree Anquet was not perfect but it is quite annoying to be asked to pay again to use the maps I already own. So 2 questions:
Am I right in thinking Anquet is the only provider other than the OS that provides maps with proper contours? They are essential for the type of walking I do.
Also can someone say in plain non-tech English what you man by the OS app not being "mature." Do you mean bits don't work and if so, which?
I've got an iphone and I will no doubt be experimenting with different apps so will post more comments if I find out anything useful.
Thanks
SandySandynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-57137992512942454392019-08-22T15:41:55.167+01:002019-08-22T15:41:55.167+01:00I'm sure you guys are all aware of GPXsee if y...I'm sure you guys are all aware of GPXsee if you just want to take a peek at a route on your home PC/Mac/Linux box without too much clutter before walking. Anquet have moved to a subscription service and their !:25,000 OS maps can be had for around £15 per year. If you opt for their premium service where the maps are up-dated you can get OS 1 to 25K maps in HD for the UK for around £25 per year. This requires a mobile with a lot of memory as the HD UK maps are 28gb but most modern high spec mobiles come with an internal memory of 64gb. One word of warning I tried to get the HD maps on an older Samsung phone (S5) by purchasing a 64gb external SD card on which to store the maps but found that the response rate of the gps marker was very poor, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes to record your movement. With modern phones which have only internal memory there is no issue with gps response.
One final benefit of the new(ish) service is that you are no longer tethered to a pc ; you can download SWC routes straight to your phone. If you want to devise your own routes then I find it is best to install the OMN software on your pc.
PeteBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02135468832090264900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-91458438770111386802016-12-11T13:48:10.084+00:002016-12-11T13:48:10.084+00:00OsmAnd is an app similar to Maps.Me.

I use Anquet OS maps which are "in the cloud" via my laptop but which I sync to my Samsung Galaxy S5 through an OMN app which is available on Apple and Android. However you have to download the maps and store them on your device. I have the whole of the UK OS 1:25000 maps on my Samsung: 8GB of data so you need a fair bit of memory. It also takes 2-3 hours to download even with a good wi-fi connection. Anquet often have a sale on so its worth checking out their web site for the latest prices. You can also download specific OS areas.
A very good free alternative mapping app is MAPS.ME. You can download any country in the world! I have got the UK on my phone but you can only use kmz files for your routes. It works well though and you are not tied to a computer: you can download routes directly to your phone.PeteBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02135468832090264900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16756786.post-11318520589942037682015-12-28T06:29:20.931+00:002015-12-28T06:29:20.931+00:00I use I phone 6.
